Call for Panel Proposals: 2010 ASIANetwork Conference
Hosted by Agnes Scott College
Emory University Conference Center, Atlanta, Georgia
April 9-11, 2010
Imagining Asia
What is Asia? Who is imagining and defining Asia? What does it mean to teach/study Asia? The 2010 annual meeting of ASIANetwork will provide an interdisciplinary forum that will help us explore the different ways in which Asia has been and continues to be imagined in new research and the different ways in which we teach. Possible topics for panels include (but are not limited to):
- What are the different ways in which Asia has been imagined?
- How has the imagining of Asia spurred creativity, inside and outside Asia?
- With the recent collapse of the global economy, how have global economic practices shifted to reflect the emerging economic dominance of India and China?
- With the trend towards regionalization and globalization, how has the concept of Asia transformed international politics?
- How is popular culture changing the way Asians and others imagine Asia? How is the cinema of and about Asia changing images of Asia and elsewhere?
- How is Asia imagined outside of Europe and the United States in places such as Latin America, Africa, and Eastern Europe?
- Is there a connection strong enough between the different societies within Asia to provide the basis for emergent Asian identity(ies)?
- How has the Asian diaspora and the shifted demographics of the West transformed the way Asia is imagined?
- How do music, performing arts, visual culture, and other creative expressions define and/or transcend the concept of Asia?
- How are Asian religions both influencing and responding to changing conceptions of Asia?
- What other ways do you imagine Asia? (Other ideas are welcome).
We welcome papers and panels on teaching, research and other forms of artistic expression. The 2010 ASIANetwork Conference will be held on April 9-11, 2010 at the Emory Conference Center Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia, and is hosted by Agnes Scott College.
